HDPE Reinforced Electrofusion Coupler that are not injection moulded and do not have external reinforcement are likely to expand during fusion. Coupler expansion increases the gap between the pipe and coupler, which reduces weld pressure in the joint. This leads to slow crack growth failure through the weld plane. Slow Crack Growth, by its name, is slow and occurs over time (1-5 years), well beyond the joint successfully passing hydrostatic testing on site. DSD Appendix 5A Clause 5.6.13, requires non-injection moulded couplers to have a suitable form of external reinforcement to prevent expansion applied to the HDPE Reinforced Electrofusion Coupler as parts of it’s manufacture.
First of all, the characteristics of electrofusion connection are: the resistance wire embedded in the inner surface of electrofusion fittings is energized and heated, so that the inner surface of the pipe fitting and the outer surface of the socket pipe reach the melting temperature, and pressure is generated at the same time, and they are melted into one after cooling to achieve the purpose of welding. The advantages of this connection method are:
1. Applicable to pipes of all specifications and sizes;
2. Low equipment investment and low maintenance costs;
3. The connection operation is simple and easy to master, and the construction efficiency is high;
4. Keep the inner wall of the pipeline smooth without affecting the flow rate;
5. The reliability of the weld is high. The only disadvantage is that it requires pipe fittings to connect, which increases the cost.
The characteristics of hot melt connection are: heating the two ends of the welding material to make it reach the melting temperature, quickly fit together, and cool under a certain pressure to achieve the purpose of welding. The advantages of this connection method are:
1. Since no electric fusion pipe fittings are used, the project cost can be reduced;
2. The connection process is simple and easy to learn,
However, it also has certain disadvantages, such as:
1. The welding effect is easily affected by environmental and human factors;
2. The investment in hot melt equipment is higher than that of electric fusion welding machines, and the volume and weight are larger;
